As the new year gets underway, many of us may be considering making changes to the home over the coming months.
And with the arrival of 2022 come a number of predictions for what we should be looking out for in terms of interior design.
So, whether you intend to go big and bold this year, or make a few subtle changes here and there, here are five of the top trends to expect:
1. Japandi
A hybrid of Scandinavian design and Japanese interiors, Japandi is an east-meets-west trend that combines relaxing, minimalist décor with a neutral palette and natural materials.
The emphasis here is on the simple and stylish and finding balance in life, with colours including fresh off-whites, natural wood hues, greens and greys.
Natural carpets and rugs can be brought in to complement wooden floors and functional, yet stylish, furniture.
2. Feature walls
Yes, it’s true, feature walls are back in vogue!
Opt for a wallpaper print with a striking design – whether that is through a strong (geometric, perhaps) pattern or a bold colour.
Or, if a patterned feature wall is too much, try a textured wallpaper to add impact.
3. Bold colours
After another gloomy year, many of us will be looking to bring a little colour back into our lives.
Try strong yellows, such as Farrow & Ball’s Babouche No 223, on a feature wall or bring gorgeous blues, greens and mauves in via your cushions, throws and artwork.
One or two new pieces of furniture in a vivid new shade can really lift a space. Trying using colour in unexpected places too – on a radiator, floorboards or staircase, perhaps.
4. Earthy clay tones
At the same time, however, those rich, earthy clay tones are still about to bring us comfort.
Reddish-brown, terracotta and tan are likely to be brought together still in 2022 to create sanctuary spaces for us to hibernate in until the spring.
These nature-inspired colours will be especially prevalent in our soft furnishings, including exquisitely textured items.
Look out for plush velvets, high quality linens and natural wool accessories that work together to make us feel warm, enveloped and happy to hunker down.
5. Cottage comfort
Rustic touches and country-style living are also making an appearance this year.
Again, this look sees a strong use of natural wood, as well as white or antique-white paintwork and simple furniture design.
Here, however, you might choose to bring in a little ironwork and even a touch of brass. Dress your spaces with fresh flowers as spring arrives and use white cotton in curtains, throws and bed linen as the weather warms up to bring a fresh, summer ambience to the home
