Top five tips for finding your next rental home

Rental properties are in high demand at the moment so here are our top tips for anyone keen to find something soon:

  1. Do your research

Make sure you know exactly where you want to live and what your budget is. Check properties like this do exist. Think about whether you want to live alone or share. Make a checklist of features your next rental home has to include ie do you want some outside space? Do you need access to a lockable shed? Doing your research in advance will narrow down your choices and enable you to move more quickly.

  • Contact reputable agencies

Find out which agencies have the best reputations for finding good homes for tenants and working well with their landlords. These are the kinds of agencies you want to be signed up with. Then call them and tell them what you are looking for. Again, the more precise you can be about your requirements, the better. Discuss what they will require from you in the event they find you somewhere so you can be sure you can move quickly and won’t lose out.

  • Use word of mouth

Tell people you are looking for a new rental home and ask them to put the word out for you. You might hear of someone moving on from a property before it has been advertised.

  • Monitor the market

As well as contacting agencies, you need to be monitoring the market via portals such as Rightmove and Zoopla. Set up alerts so you are notified as soon as something suitable is advertised. It is also worth monitoring your local press, online and in print – and of course keeping an eye on what any agencies are listing on their websites.

  • Look at noticeboards

Once you have decided which area you want to live in you could always wander the neighbourhood looking at notices in shops and supermarkets. Occasionally rental properties and house shares are advertised this way.
